Whatup Reader!

I’m writing this email from a hotel in Geneva as we wrap up the end of our trip to Gstaad, Switzerland to watch all the beach volleyball. Yes, you read that correctly, beach volleyball in Switzerland. The alps make for one hell of a backdrop.

If you happened to catch yesterday’s Maestro on the Mic podcast episode, I discussed my feelings about working vacation and the fact that I very much take a hybrid approach, choosing to batch some things beforehand, completely block off other things, and take some things with me.

Newsletter emails tend to be something I take with me and opt to write while I’m away instead of batching beforehand, namely because I really do enjoy the timeliness of them and drawing from whatever experiences I’m collecting.

I write these emails on Mondays, and while I’m by no means planning things out way in advance, my eyes and ears are open for whatever inspiration may fall from the sky.

The inspiration for today’s email fell out of our friend’s mouth after the final match of the tournament: “We came this far, we might as well see the rest of it.”

After flying all the way from LA to Switzerland, watching over 30 volleyball matches across 5 days, and spending nearly 8 hours a day at the courts, it was time for the awards ceremony, and we were deciding whether or not to stay and watch.

Lex and I had seen the whole thing last year, so we fully left it up to four other folks we made the trip with, and that’s when Diana said, “We came this far, we might as well see the rest of it.”

Some part of me was hoping they’d want to stay, but I know not everyone is a volleyball psycho like Lex and myself, and end-of-week burnout is a very real thing.

Now, I realize that sunk cost fallacy is a very real thing, and I’ll be the first to tell you to stop doing shit that you hate. So I didn’t interpret Diana’s words as meaning any of that.

Without getting all Instagram inspirational on you, Diana’s words landed as a reminder to simply be present in the moment.

We’ve been planning this trip for months, we flew thousands of miles, we left our routines, we spent the monies, we walked in the rain, we sat in the sun, we watched all the matches…why would we not watch the culminating event of the weekend?

We had nowhere to be. No bus to get on. No countdown to beat.

The entire ceremony lasted probably 10 minutes, 15 tops, and there really is something special about witnessing people celebrate accomplishments they’ve worked so hard for.

I know we’re all busy. We have things to do. But I do think it’s worth noticing the times that we’re willing to cut an experience short because we’ve already moved on to the next thing simply because we’ve been conditioned to quickly move on to the next thing.

Like Diana said, “We came this far, we might as well see the rest of it.”

Happy Tuesday, Reader.

Maestro out.

PS – Yes, I got my protein drink every day and Lex bought all the chocolate.

Did you know that in Gstaad, Switzerland for just $2.50 you can get the most delicious protein drink that has only 4 ingredients (skim milk, milk protein, cream, fat-reduced cocoa powder) AND 40 grams of protein?!?! The US could never. Let’s chat. If you’ve been around these parts for a bit you know I’m quite fond of the moniker, Last Minute Lucy. I use it endearingly to try and encourage the folks who like to drag their feet to pick ‘em up and do the...

Y’all know I’ve been deep in all things messaging, and part of that has included attempts to do something that I don’t do all that often: read some books. Now, the reason I’m not so fond of books is quite simple: People be saying too damn much. Get to the point already! 300 pages to say what could have been delivered in a single chapter? It’s giving...

I wear glasses but my eyesight isn’t that bad. Either way, I lost the battle and the big toe on my left foot has been jacked up since. Fast-forward to last week and I was chatting with the homie, Dr. Becky, pelvic floor PT extraordinaire who just so happens to have quite the penchant for the...
