Something different

Whatup Reader!

Okay right off the bat I need to correct something from last week's email. That reframe of the two bird idiom was supposed to read: "Feed two birds with one scone". Scone with a C, not stone with a T. That was 100% my bad. Also please let that serve as proof that I don't be using AI to write these emails.

Speaking of AI, my other podcast, Prompting Curiosity, just turned a year old last week on August 7! If AI ain't your thing, all good. If you're curious, I got you. Check out the website. I worked really hard on it. You can search for anything, and every episode is also written as a blog post. So for those of you who ain't about that podcast life, no worries, you can still get your learn on.

Today's riff is inspired by last Saturday's house cleaning. For those of you that don't know, Lex and I do a super deep cleaning of the house once a month, and one of my tasks is to clean the big-ass glass table we have in the dining room. In full transparency, I do my best every time, but sometimes I be leaving it at “good enough” because sometimes those gotdamn streaks have a mind of their own.

This past Saturday I decided to try something different, which was to spray only one-third of the table at a time, wipe it down, and then proceed to the next section. The directions on the bottle say to spray and wipe, which is exactly what I had been doing, but apparently there is a significant difference between spraying and wiping, and spraying, waiting 17 seconds, and then wiping. Who knew?

So, I gave the new technique a shot and was it perfect? No. But the results were definitely way better and I basically had zero urge to curse at the table this time.

It was nice to be rewarded for having a willingness to try something new.

Last week we had the kickoff call for Crew 52, the content creation accountability program that I recently launched, and this concept was a very big part of that call. I straight up asked the members if they were willing to try something new, and had them verbally and visually commit.

If you want a different outcome you gotta be willing to try something different than what you’ve been doing.

I also understand the resistance.

I’m currently going through these growing pains with volleyball, attempting to learn how to take a look at the opponent later in my approach. For those of you who have no idea wtf that means, translation: I’m out there looking like it’s my first time ever playing.

Change is haaaaard. Struggling at something you once did just fine, all in the name of progress, is a tough pill to swallow.

But if you want something different you gotta be willing to try something different.

Are you willing to try something different?

I do have a suggested action item for those of you who are nodding your head in agreement but perhaps internally doing something that looks more like this:

Change the definition of winning.

Or more broadly stated, change the metric for success.

Regarding our big-ass glass table, there were still some streaks, but it took WAY less time. Win.

For volleyball, it’s simply having the courage to take that look, ball contact be damned. Success.

For you, I have no idea what it will look like, but I can say with 100% certainty that if you want something different, you gotta be willing to try something different.

Happy Tuesday, Reader.

Maestro out.

Before I hop into today musing I gotta share that after I sent out last week’s email and mentioned my distaste for the idiom “kill two birds with one stone”, a few of you hit me back and shared that you use the phrase “feed two birds with one stone”. Y’all truly are the best. Speaking of the best, today I want to share a question I received in the DMs from one of my very best good homies. I absolutely love this question and it got me thinking about...my...

No, I don’t play golf but I find the content that some folks create about it really fun to watch. Anyway, as is the case with Instagram, the majority of the content on my feed is recommended...
