Timeless footwork

Whatup Reader!

Sometimes I like to sit and think about hypotheticals.

I play out made-up scenarios to see how what the butterfly effects might look like.

This time, it was about beach volleyball.

I spend no less that 6 hours a week playing beach volleyball. I started in early 2020, right before the world shut down, and I’ve been obsessed ever since.

Lex andI take lessons twice a week. We play pick-up for a few hours every Friday. We’ve taken a last-minute trip to Florida, flying behind a literal hurricane so we could watch our friend play in a tournament. We’ve traveled all the way to Switzerland and opted to spend our time watching an international tournament instead of exploring the Alps.

We have two Volleyball World TV subscriptions. Pretty much every other video that comes across my Instagram feed is volleyball-related.

So, what if this sport that I’ve grown so fond of, what if it was…different?

What if a beach volleyball match had no end?

For this made-up scenario to work out we’d have to imagine that all players had unlimited stamina and strength and could just play forever. But we’re imagining everything else so this shouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

So, how would an endless match change things?

At its core, this is a hypothetical scenario about going from a zero-sum game to an infinite game. A game with no end. A game with no single team emerging victorious while the other walks away looking at their feet.

Just playing forever.

What would change?

One possibility would be the need to change the definition of winning.

Another, perhaps more exciting possibility, would be the reimagined journey towards mastery.

An infinite amount of time to refine one’s craft. To dive into all the nuances. To explore all the possibilities. To show up without fear of failure.

Now, what if we took that same thought process and applied it to all of our endeavors?

What if we removed the time constraints from other areas in our life?

Don’t get me wrong, deadlines are absolutely magic (and death is very real), but arbitrarily imposed finish lines often have us becoming slaves to the clock instead of masters of our craft.

What changes if we tell ourselves that “It takes as long as it takes,” and then simply give it as long as it takes?

This is not me telling you to drag your feet and avoid the work. Far from it.

This is me musing and hypothesizing about what might change if we gave our feet an unlimited amount of time to do the work.

Happy Tuesday, Reader.

Maestro out.

This past weekend, Lex and I were fortunate enough to have a completely full dining room table (so full that we actually had to bring in the two chairs that we typically have out on the patio). Our dinner table was full, our hearts were full, our bellies were full, and needless to say, our schedules were full. Community involves people, people have...
