Do THE thing.

Whatup Reader!

I know the last few weeks have been story time Tuesdays (much appreciate the positive feedback btw 💚), but sometimes I be using these Tuesday emails to simply give you permission that you didn’t need (but that I know many folks still wait for).

Today’s permission slip:

Not everything needs to get done. Some things you can just ignore forever.

Actual footage of Nike right now:

But it’s true. And this is coming from me, the Maestro with the mantra of: Do the thing.

Notice, however, the phrase is ‘Do THE thing.’

Not, do all the things. Nor is it, do the things simply because you think you’re supposed to.

For real, some stuff you can just ignore forever and not do.

Now, what those specific things are for you, I cannot say. But I promise you that they exist.

They are all the things that are taking up space in your brain, and consuming precious amounts of mental and emotional energy, and you can just…not do them.

Because I know folks feel better when they get to go second, allow me to share Exhibit A - my unread emails and texts:

And exhibit B - my unanswered phone calls and apps that need updating:

Very few things in our day-to-day are life or death, and yet I watch as people treat an email like it’s open-heart surgery.

Y’all, it ain’t that serious.

And then we wonder why we don’t have the energy to do the things that are actually important (like spend time with our people, and exercise, and make better food choices, and fight fascism).

Not everything needs to get done. Some things you can just ignore forever.

And honestly, if they’re that important, they’ll come back around.

Happy Tuesday, Reader.

Maestro out.

Read time: 2 min 5 sec Whatup Reader! Sometimes I like to sit and think about hypotheticals. I play out made-up scenarios to see how what the butterfly effects might look like. This time, it was about beach volleyball. I spend no less that 6 hours a week playing beach volleyball. I started in early 2020, right before the world shut down, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Lex andI take lessons twice a week. We play pick-up for a few hours every Friday. We’ve taken a last-minute trip to...

Read time: 1 min 53 sec Whatup Reader! First off, BIG thank you for the kind (and enthusiastic) responses to last week’s email. Ya’ll are my people. I wanted to follow up that email with a business lesson that maybe is a non-sequitur, but I don’t even care, because it needs to be said. Ya’ll, if no one has raised their hands and said they want the thing that you want to make, DON’T LAUNCH IT. I’m not saying this because I don’t believe in you, I’m saying this because I believe in math. So...

Read time: 3 min 21 sec Whatup Reader! Sooooo, yesterday the email marketing service formally known as ConverKit sent out an email announcing a significant price increase for all of its users, effective October 15th. People were, understandably and justifiably, pissed. Everyone checking their email on Monday morning. Now, I use ConvertKit. I’ve been a loyal subscriber since 2015. Their platform is actually how you’re receiving this very email. Yes, my price is going up, no, I’m not happy...
