Because You Want To

Whatup Reader!

We are two days out from Press Record: The Podcast Launch Workshop, and yes, I’m sending an email that includes a story that conveys a lesson that ties into sales pitch.

We about that transparency life.

I figure if the offer isn’t for you, hopefully the lesson will be. As always, take what serves you and leave the rest.

So, the story: This past weekend Lex and I left the bubble and drove to Harbor City to watch our friend Jemma perform in an ice-skating recital.

Now, when I say ice skating recital, I mean legit ice-skating recital. Music, makeup, sparkly costumes, parents, and yes, performances by children.

No one’s age was printed on the flyer, but if I had to guess, the majority of the 21 participants were under the age of 11, two looked to be maybe 14 or 15 years old, and then there was 38-year-old, 5-ft 10-inch, Jemma.

Fuck yes.

We play volleyball with Jemma, and about a year ago while we were driving to a tournament she mentioned that she thinking about getting back into ice skating. She had done it growing up, and for whatever reason, the bug had returned.

Well, the bug bit her, it stuck, and this past weekend 12 of us were banging on the glass at The Skating Edge Ice Arena, yelling our heads off after every jump, turn, twist, and spin (clearly if it’s not a triple axel, I don’t know what it’s called).

Jemma's not trying to go to the Olympics. She’s not getting paid to do this (she's actually paying to do this). She did it...simply because she wanted to.

Enter, the lesson for this email: It’s ok (read: awesome) to do things simply because you want to.

Because they make you happy. Because they help you out. Because they bring you joy. Because they serve as an outlet. Simply because you want to do them.

Enter, the pitch: I don’t podcast because it’s the best way to grow my business. I podcast because it helps me process and articulate my ideas. Because it’s a great way to practice using my voice, literally and figuratively. Because it’s fun to create in that way. Because I legit enjoy it.

Do I think it’s helpful for my business? Absolutely.

Do I think it helps me more than it directly helps my business? Absolutely.

I realize that in a world that tells us to maximize and quantify every single action we take in our business, my advice to start a podcast for you might not be well received.

But, when have I ever cared about that world thinks?

Last week I wrote about how a podcast could be used to help others. I’d be remiss if I didn’t use today’s email to articulate how a podcast can help you, and the fact that your enjoyment is absolutely reason enough (read: the best reason) to start one.

So, if that reason speaks to you and you want help doing the thing, register for Press Record and come hang out this Thursday.

I’ll teach you exactly what you need to do to start your podcast: What to buy, how to record, where to publish, and how to avoid the tech spirals that stop most people before they even begin.

Happy Tuesday, Reader.

Read time: 2 min 9 sec Whatup Reader! No life lessons this week, just an announcement, which, I guess is actually a lesson: If you want to make sure people know about something, make sure you actually talk about that thing. So, the announcement: Cinco de Maestro is around the corner, and this year I’m doing it a little differently. No countdowns. No "expiring" discounts (let’s be honest, they always come back). No buy more to save more. Instead, two new projects that I’m genuinely excited to...

Read time: 2 min 14 sec Whatup Reader! Before we hop into it today, I’ve got one MOAR resource for you to help keep the kiddos safe. In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, two Tuesdays ago I wrote an email to you fine folks about stranger danger after I intervened in a potentially no bueno situation at the park. My girl, Erika Mayall, responded to that email and shared with me the concept of "tricky people". This is a great reframe especially for kids who may have people pleasing...
